Mexican authorities have arrested nine members of the Gulf Cartel in Tamaulipas, including Antonio Guadalupe, known as 'El Lexus', a leader affiliated with the Grupo Escorpión, a security source confirmed to Lopez Doriga Digital. The operation, involving the Mexican military, National Guard, and Air Force, took place in Matamoros and Sandoval, key areas for cartel activity.
Among those detained were eight members of the cartel's 'Operativa Ranger' group, described as a tactical cell operating under the Gulf Cartel's umbrella, according to La Jornada and Aristegui Noticias. The joint operation resulted in the seizure of multiple weapons and vehicles, indicating a significant disruption of the cartel’s resources and operational capabilities.
The arrests mark a continuation of Mexican federal efforts to dismantle organized crime networks in northeastern Mexico, a region plagued by violence linked to drug trafficking. Omar García Harfuch, head of Mexico City's police, publicly confirmed the detentions, emphasizing the collaboration between various military and security forces.
Authorities are expected to pursue further investigations into the arrested individuals’ roles within the cartel and their links to broader criminal networks. The impact of these arrests on the Gulf Cartel’s control in Tamaulipas remains to be seen, with officials monitoring for potential retaliatory violence or shifts in cartel alliances.
