Vehicle Restrictions Enforced in Mexico City and Edomex on April 15-16 to Curb Pollution

Mexico City and the State of Mexico (Edomex) have enforced vehicle restrictions on April 15 and 16 as part of the "Hoy No Circula" program aimed at reducing air pollution. Officials have prohibited circulation of vehicles based on license plate numbers and hologram colors from 5:00 to 22:00 hours, affecting various sectors of the metropolitan area, according to reports from El Financiero and Aristegui Noticias.

On April 15, specific cars were barred from traffic to help maintain cleaner air and avoid fines, with authorities urging drivers to verify their vehicle eligibility ahead of time, as noted by Aristegui Noticias. The restrictions continued on April 16, targeting vehicles with green license plates ending in 1 and 2, including foreign vehicles with comparable holograms, covering multiple municipalities in Edomex, El Financiero detailed.

The measures form part of a broader effort to improve air quality, which includes preparing for the weekend's higher temperatures reaching up to 31 degrees Celsius while managing vehicle flow, as El Financiero stated. This program also affected cars with blue stickers and plates ending in 9 and 0 on April 17, alongside nearby municipalities such as Ecatepec and Tlalnepantla.

Further, on April 18, Hoy No Circula restrictions remain active, preventing circulation of certain vehicles with specific holograms and plate numbers to combat pollution, with Clara Brugada, head of Mexico City's government, emphasizing the need to renovate all Metro lines to complement these efforts, according to El Financiero.

Authorities will continue monitoring air quality and may adjust restrictions based on pollution levels in the coming days, highlighting the ongoing prioritization of environmental health in the Mexico City metropolitan area.
