The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) has announced plans to contest eight seats in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections as part of its alliance with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), including six reserved and two general constituencies, according to The Hindu. However, the party will break ranks and run independently in the 2026 Puducherry Assembly elections, fielding candidates in three constituencies, defying DMK’s allocation of just one seat to VCK.
This decision to contest independently in Puducherry follows rising tensions within the alliance, with VCK leader Thol. Thirumavalavan expressing dissatisfaction over seat sharing with the DMK and Congress, leading to the dissolution of their coalition in the Union Territory, as reported by The Hindu. The DMK had earmarked the Ozhukarai seat for VCK, but the party’s move signals potential fragmentation in local electoral cooperation.
Amid these developments, VCK adopted a resolution on March 23, 2026, seeking an increase to two-digit Assembly seats and specifically requesting one seat in the Rajya Sabha, according to reports by The Hindu. This resolution was in response to DMK’s push to limit seats allocated to its allies to make room for newer parties such as DMDK and Makkal Needhi Maiam, indicating VCK’s intent to strengthen its political influence both in the state legislature and Parliament.
In Tamil Nadu, VCK’s cooperation with the DMK remains intact, contrasting with its independent stand in Puducherry. The party’s demand for enhanced representation suggests a strategic effort to carve out a larger political space amid evolving alliance equations, with implications for seat distribution ahead of the elections.
Observers will be watching upcoming negotiations between DMK and its allies to see if VCK’s pursuit of a Rajya Sabha seat and expanded Assembly presence leads to revised seat-sharing agreements or further conflicts. The independent contest in Puducherry and VCK’s assertiveness in Tamil Nadu could reshape coalition dynamics in the 2026 electoral cycle.
