Toronto FC has finalized the signing of USMNT striker Josh Sargent from Norwich City for a reported fee around £20 million ($22-27 million), marking a record transfer for the Major League Soccer club, according to Yahoo Sports. Sargent, 26, joins Toronto as part of their offseason effort to strengthen the attack and boost their competitiveness in MLS.
Sargent has been with Norwich City since 2021 and remains under contract until 2028. He has scored 15 goals for Norwich, including eight this season, and has netted five goals for the United States national team. Previously, he played for Werder Bremen, where he developed into a prolific forward in the Bundesliga.
The transfer reportedly includes a resale fee benefiting Werder Bremen, with additional bonuses possible, as per Yahoo Sports. Sargent’s move follows reported conflicts with Norwich management, which led to him training with the reserve squad and precipitated his transfer.
In his career, Sargent has tallied 51 goals in the English Championship and Bundesliga combined, highlighting his experience in competitive European leagues. His return to MLS while still in his prime is notable, underscoring Toronto FC’s ambition to attract high-caliber international talent.
Observers will be watching how Sargent adapts to MLS and impacts Toronto FC’s 2024 campaign, especially with his contract situation secured long-term and the club investing heavily to improve its league standing. The deal also sets a precedent for future significant transfers of US national team players to MLS.
