A district court in Jinju has issued an arrest warrant for a truck driver involved in a deadly rally incident that resulted in one death and two injuries, according to the Korea Times. The truck driver, a non-union member in his 40s, has been charged with murder after driving into participants of a rally organized by the Korean Public Service and Transport Workers' Union.
Police in Changwon also announced they are seeking an arrest warrant for the same driver following the fatal collision near Jinju, as reported by Yonhap News Agency. The incident took place outside a CU Jinju logistics center on Monday morning, where the driver reportedly acted recklessly while rally participants attempted to block the vehicle from leaving the scene.
In addition to the truck driver, police are pursuing an arrest warrant for a union member in his 60s, which the Korea Times noted as part of the broader investigation. Charges against the driver include murder and other offenses linked to the violent episode that has raised public concern.
The Korea Herald confirmed that the police are moving to extend the driver's arrest, aiming to hold him accountable for the protest-related death and injuries. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances leading up to the truck's collision with rallygoers.
Moving forward, authorities are expected to determine if additional charges will be filed as investigations proceed and to assess the broader implications for safety protocols at public demonstrations involving labor unions and opposing groups. The outcome of these legal proceedings will be closely watched for their impact on future protest management and accountability.
