South Korea Records 4.76 Million Foreign Visitors in Q1, Driven by BTS Concerts

South Korea's first-quarter tourist numbers reached a historic high of 4.76 million, a 23% rise from last year, with Chinese visitors leading at 1.45 million. The notable increase underscores the enduring appeal of Korea's cultural exports, especially K-pop, amid geopolitical tensions. Monitoring upcoming events and potential tourism policies will indicate if this growth sustains into the second quarter.

South Korea reported a record 4.76 million foreign tourist arrivals in the first quarter of 2026, representing a 23 percent increase compared to the same period last year, according to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. This influx was driven largely by a major BTS concert held in Seoul in February, which reignited international interest in visiting South Korea despite ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, as noted by the Korea Herald.

China was the top source market, contributing approximately 1.45 million visitors during this period, followed by significant numbers from Japan, Taiwan, and various countries in the Americas and Europe, reports the Korea Times. The rise in visitors was also supported by increased cruise tourism and arrivals through regional airports, broadening the access points for foreign tourists.

The month of March alone saw 2.06 million visitors, setting a monthly record. The Korea Herald highlighted that the renewed activity of BTS, including their landmark Seoul performances, played a key role in sustaining this surge. This boost demonstrates South Korea’s growing appeal as a cultural destination amidst geopolitical challenges.

Spending by international visitors linked to the BTS concerts also surged, with foreign fans' credit card expenditures at over 55.5 billion won ($37.6 million), according to analysis by Hana Card reported by the Korea Times. Around 30,000 overseas attendees contributed to this spending, covering airfare, lodging, dining, and retail, with Japanese tourists accounting for 32 percent of foreign buyers.

Looking ahead, South Korea aims to build on this momentum by further promoting K-pop and cultural tourism. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism will monitor the impact of upcoming events and ongoing geopolitical factors to sustain growth in inbound tourism through the rest of the year.
