The Philippine Supreme Court has ordered the House of Representatives to explain the basis for the impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte, increasing judicial scrutiny on the ongoing process, according to reports by the Philippine Daily Inquirer. This directive comes amid multiple petitions filed by Duterte’s supporters challenging the impeachment proceedings before the court.
Duterte’s camp submitted a third petition to the Supreme Court seeking to halt the proceedings and nullify new complaints, with 14 individuals including former CHEd Commissioner Ronald Adamat joining the intervention efforts. Despite these attempts, Batangas Rep. Gerville Luistro, chair of the House justice committee, confirmed that the impeachment hearings will continue since no temporary restraining order has been issued by the court.
Lawmakers remain firm on proceeding with the impeachment, with Manila Rep. Joel Chua criticizing Vice President Duterte’s efforts to block the trial judicially and asserting that she should face the corruption allegations in Congress. Meanwhile, Rep. Terry Ridon predicted a contentious hearing scheduled for April 14 and linked ongoing impeachment activities to political maneuvering involving House Speaker Martin Romualdez.
The Palace also weighed in on related political tensions, with Press Officer Claire Castro reprimanding Duterte for her comments questioning President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s health, calling them irresponsible. House members acknowledged the Supreme Court’s balanced approach in not yet issuing a restraining order, maintaining the separation of judicial and legislative roles.
Observers will closely monitor the Supreme Court’s forthcoming response to the House’s explanation request, which could define the legitimacy and timeline of the impeachment proceedings. The April 14 hearing is seen as a critical juncture that may determine whether the process escalates or stalls amid legal and political challenges.
