The Mexican Chamber of Deputies has elected Aureliano Hernández Palacios Cardel as the new head of the Auditoría Superior de la Federación (ASF), securing 472 votes in his favor. Hernández will begin his eight-year term in 2026, succeeding David Colmenares Páramo, who has led the institution for the past eight years, according to El Financiero.
In his inaugural address, Hernández emphasized a firm commitment to honesty, zero tolerance for corruption, and the protection of public funds. He also underscored the importance of leveraging technology and increasing citizen participation to enhance the ASF’s oversight capabilities, as reported by El Financiero.
David Colmenares, outgoing ASF head, publicly acknowledged the institution’s progress during his tenure and praised the ASF’s staff for their dedication. He expressed confidence in Hernández’s professional background and integrity, suggesting a continuity in pursuing transparency and fiscal responsibility within the agency.
Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, the Head of Government of Mexico City, clarified that she was not involved in Hernández’s appointment. La Jornada notes her statement amid wider public discourse on the need for the ASF to intensify efforts in sanctioning corrupt officials under the new leadership.
Looking ahead, the focus will be on how Hernández consolidates the ASF’s role in combating corruption and safeguarding federal spending integrity. The upcoming years will test his pledge to strengthen fiscal oversight and implement reforms to close gaps in accountability across Mexican public institutions.
