Meta has announced it will shut down its Horizon Worlds virtual reality platform on Quest headsets by June 15, 2026, marking an end to its VR metaverse experiment. The company cited low user growth and sustained financial losses in its Reality Labs division as reasons for the closure, according to reports from TheStreet and Times of India.
The Horizon Worlds app will be delisted from the Quest store by March 31, and VR users will lose access to key virtual spaces such as Horizon Central and the Events Arena by that date, as noted by Daring Fireball. After June 15, Horizon Worlds will no longer be available on Meta’s VR hardware, effectively ending its VR social experience.
While VR support is ending, Meta confirmed it will continue to develop a mobile-only version of Horizon Worlds, switching focus away from immersive headsets in favor of smartphones and web platforms. TechCrunch highlights that this pivot reflects Meta's ongoing commitment to maintaining the metaverse concept, albeit with a scaled-back approach.
The VR shutdown follows multiple setbacks for Meta’s metaverse initiative, including significant layoffs among development staff and an estimated $80 billion loss linked to the broader Reality Labs efforts, as reported by 404 Media. The shift also aligns with Meta’s strategic increase in investments in artificial intelligence and smartglasses, signaling new priorities beyond VR.
Looking ahead, it will be important to monitor how the mobile version of Horizon Worlds evolves and whether Meta’s growing focus on AI and wearable technology can reinvigorate its vision for the metaverse. The company's resource reallocation suggests a broader reevaluation of how immersive social tech fits into its future product roadmap.
