Tahoma High School secured its third consecutive 4A team championship at Mat Classic XXXVII, held at the Tacoma Dome, producing five finalists and claiming three individual titles through Brycen Dawley, Isac Deonigi, and Owen Marshall, according to Yahoo Sports. This achievement matched the school’s record and underscored Tahoma's dominance in the division.
Gonzaga Prep also delivered a standout performance, with freshmen Miro Parr-Coffin (106 pounds) and Austin Schield (138 pounds) winning their first state titles. Senior Izzy Acosta added to the Bullpups’ success by capturing his third consecutive title, helping Gonzaga Prep finish second overall, their best team result to date.
Athletes from the Basin area, particularly the Moses Lake Mavericks, made significant advances at the event. Eli Anderson reached the finals in the 215-pound weight class, contributing to the Mavericks’ sixth-place team finish, while several teammates secured top-seven spots in the consolation brackets, highlighting Basin’s depth and competitiveness.
In the broader 3A and 4A divisions, South Sound wrestlers from schools such as Kennedy Catholic, Sumner, Capital, and Peninsula earned multiple state titles. Noteworthy individual champions included Farzad Karimi, Lazarus McEwen, and Tre Haines, reinforcing strong South Sound presence in the tournament.
Upcoming attention will focus on how teams build on these performances for next year’s Mat Classic, particularly whether Tahoma can extend their championship streak and how emerging talent from Gonzaga Prep and Basin-area squads will develop at the state level.
