Traffic on Malaysia’s highways during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri travel period has remained mostly smooth, with only localized congestion reported near key rest areas such as Seremban R&R and Gua Musang. According to the Malaysian Highway Authority, vehicle flow stayed steady on major routes on March 20, although minor bottlenecks occurred due to breakdowns and increased traffic volume (Malay Mail).
The Gua Musang district experienced the heaviest traffic congestion, with over 30 minor accidents reported since the onset of the Raya exodus, mainly attributed to driver fatigue. Police confirmed several vehicles broke down along the Gua Musang-Kuala Lipis road, resulting in a traffic jam exceeding 20 kilometers near Merapoh and Kampung Mentara. Authorities have actively managed the situations to reduce risks and maintain traffic flow (Malay Mail).
The East Coast Expressway and North-South Expressway also faced slower traffic earlier in the day, reflecting the surge in vehicles returning home for the festivities. The Malaysian Highway Authority advised motorists to plan their journeys carefully, monitor traffic updates, and ensure sufficient toll card balances to minimize delays (Malay Mail).
The Sultan of Pahang, Al-Sultan Abdullah, issued a message urging drivers to remain patient, obey traffic regulations, and prioritize vehicle safety during the holiday travel. The Pahang government has supported safe travel by establishing Rest & Service areas along the Central Spine Road to provide comfort and encourage rest breaks amid the busy travel period (Malay Mail).
Looking ahead, authorities continue to monitor traffic conditions closely and respond to incidents promptly to prevent congestion from worsening. Travelers are encouraged to use alternative routes where possible and maintain safe driving practices to ensure a smooth and safe return journey after the holiday.
