Ghana FDA Orders Seafood Ban from Tema Shipyard Amid Fish Kill Alarm

Ghana FDA Orders Seafood Ban from Tema Shipyard Amid Fish Kill Alarm

The new warning from Ghana's FDA marks a significant escalation in response to the fish mortality event, highlighting increased concerns over public health. The ban aims to prevent potential health risks while investigations continue to identify the cause. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and expect further updates as results from lab tests come in.

Ghana’s Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has issued a ban on consuming fish and seafood from the Tema Shipyard area after a mass fish kill was discovered on April 6, 2026. Officials warned the public to avoid fish within a 50-meter radius of the site, pending laboratory results to determine the cause of the dead fish, mainly Sardinella aurita, according to MyJoyOnline.

A multi-agency task force, including the Ghana Health Service and environmental and fisheries authorities, has been investigating the incident. Authorities collected 60 to 80 fish and water samples for analysis and have increased security to prevent the illegal distribution of contaminated seafood, as reported by the Ghana Health Service.

The CEO of Tema Shipyard Limited, Alhaji Osman Sulemana, denied that the facility sells fish or seafood and suggested the dead fish originated from other sources, possibly influenced by sea currents. The Ghana Health Service also stated that there is no immediate health threat while investigations continue, stressing that fish from certified markets outside the area remain safe when properly cooked.

The ongoing joint investigation seeks to clarify whether environmental factors or pollution caused the sudden fish death. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely while laboratory testing continues, with results expected to guide further public health actions.

Going forward, the FDA will base its decisions on the task force's findings, and the public is advised to adhere to the current ban until official confirmation on the safety of seafood from Tema Shipyard is provided.
