Engineers and Planners Limited officially took control of Ghana’s Damang Mine on April 18, 2026, marking a significant transition to indigenous management of a major mining operation, according to multiple reports from MyJoyOnline. The acquisition follows Gold Fields Ghana Limited's planned exit, which began in 2022, with the Ghanaian government, notably former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, playing a pivotal role in facilitating the takeover through approvals and negotiations.
Ibrahim Mahama, CEO of Engineers and Planners, confirmed that Gold Fields initiated the opportunity for his company to acquire the Damang Mine and credited the government’s involvement for the smooth transfer of ownership. Mahama emphasized that the acquisition was part of a broader national objective to increase Ghanaian participation in the mining sector and to foster community development around the mine.
Following the takeover, Ibrahim Mahama announced ambitious infrastructure projects aimed at boosting local socio-economic growth. Among these projects is the construction of an airport within six months, alongside significant improvements to road networks and sports facilities, which are expected to enhance connectivity and support economic activity in the region.
This move signals a strategic inflection point in Ghana’s mining industry by shifting control from foreign operators to local enterprises, as highlighted by analysis of the Damang Mine’s new management. Engineers and Planners' management of the mine aims to demonstrate the capacity of domestic firms to independently run large-scale mining operations while reinvesting in the surrounding communities.
Looking ahead, stakeholders will be monitoring the execution of the announced infrastructure developments and the impact of Ghanaian ownership on the operational efficiency and profitability of Damang Mine. The success of this transition could serve as a model for similar initiatives encouraging sovereign control over critical natural resources in Ghana and beyond.
