SoftBank Group and partners have announced a $33.3 billion investment in a gas-fired power plant in Pike County, Ohio, designed to supply the energy needs of a massive AI data center campus, according to Zero Hedge. The new plant is expected to generate 10 gigawatts of power and will be built on the site of the former Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant, a decommissioned uranium enrichment facility owned by the U.S. Department of Energy, as reported by The Independent and Japan Times.
The AI data center, part of SoftBank’s Stargate venture, involves a total investment of up to $500 billion, making it one of the largest construction projects in U.S. history, according to the Times of India. SoftBank's SB Energy plans to develop a vast server farm capable of supporting millions of homes while advancing AI computing capacity, according to The Register. The site redevelopment includes a $4.2 billion upgrade to the regional electrical grid to handle increased demands.
The gas plant, which SoftBank and AEP Ohio will jointly develop, is estimated to have the capacity equivalent to nine nuclear reactors, underlining the scale of the infrastructure needed to power the data center, as noted by Tom’s Hardware. The project will also bring job creation and economic activity to the region and complements Ohio's larger strategy to expand energy production, including nuclear and uranium enrichment initiatives, per Zero Hedge’s report.
The partnership involves the U.S. Department of Energy, indicating strong federal support for bolstering AI infrastructure and energy capacity in the U.S. The conversion of a former nuclear weapons site into an AI technology hub highlights a significant shift toward repurposing government assets for future technology needs, according to The Independent.
Key developments to watch include the progression of construction timelines for both the power plant and the data center, updates on regulatory approvals, and how this infrastructure investment influences the U.S. position in global AI competitiveness. The project’s successful completion could mark a major milestone in high-capacity computing and energy infrastructure integration.
