Democrat Analilia Mejia won a special election in New Jersey’s 11th congressional district, reducing the Republican majority in the U.S. House to just three seats, according to Salon. Mejia defeated Republican Joe Hathaway, securing 70% of the vote, and is set to increase Democratic representation to 214 seats against Republicans’ 217, marking a notable shift in the chamber’s balance ahead of upcoming primaries.
Mejia, a progressive candidate and former Bernie Sanders campaign director, campaigned on a platform including universal healthcare, union support, opposition to ICE, and criticism of Israel, as reported by The New Republic. Her victory follows the resignation of Democrat Mikie Sherrill, whose seat she will now fill, maintaining Democratic control of the district previously characterized by a slim Republican edge.
The Guardian emphasized Mejia’s strong stance against former President Donald Trump, which helped energize progressive and moderate voters alike. She also garnered support from prominent Democratic leaders, including Senator Bernie Sanders, reflecting a broader effort by progressives to solidify influence within the party.
CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten noted that this win is the seventh consecutive race where Democrats have exceeded expectations by more than 10 points. He linked the Democratic performance to declining approval ratings for Trump and criticized the former president’s recent social media attacks on New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani as politically counterproductive, according to Raw Story.
Looking ahead, Mejia’s election narrows the GOP House majority to a razor-thin margin, raising the stakes for legislative negotiations and party control. Political observers will closely watch upcoming special elections and primaries to see if this trend continues to shift the balance of power in Congress.
