The UK government has approved Axel Springer's £575 million acquisition of the Telegraph Media Group, ending almost three years of regulatory review, according to The Guardian. Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy confirmed there are no grounds for further investigation, clearing the way for the German publisher to take full ownership of the British media company.
Axel Springer, which owns titles including Politico and Business Insider, acquired the Telegraph from RedBird IMI, as reported by The National (UAE). The sale generated a £75 million surplus for RedBird IMI. The Telegraph currently has more than one million paying digital subscribers and is focusing on expanding its footprint in the US market.
The transaction covers both print and online operations, Reuters notes, and is part of Axel Springer's broader strategy to strengthen its UK and international media presence. Axel Springer also owns major German publications such as Bild and Die Welt. According to Politico Europe, regulatory approvals are still pending in Ireland and Austria, with the deal expected to complete in the second quarter of 2023.
The Independent highlights that Axel Springer plans to invest significantly in The Telegraph's editorial quality and digital growth, reflecting ambitions to enhance the title’s competitiveness. The Guardian adds that the approval removes uncertainty that had affected the company's future direction since the acquisition was first announced.
Observers will be closely watching how Axel Springer leverages its expanded portfolio to influence UK media and how it balances editorial independence with corporate objectives. Further regulatory reviews in other jurisdictions could impact the final stages of this acquisition.
