Sam Altman’s biometric verification project, World, is partnering with Tinder and Zoom to introduce iris-scanning technology that verifies users as human and helps prevent AI-driven scams, according to Fox Business. The new system, called World ID, assigns a ‘proof of humanity’ badge to verified users and is already piloted in Japan, with plans to roll out in the U.S. soon.
The iris-scanning feature captures detailed biometric data to reduce fake profiles and impersonations, addressing growing concerns over deepfakes and AI-generated accounts on online platforms, Capital FM Kenya and BBC Technology report. Tinder and Zoom see the technology as a key advancement to improve security and user authenticity in their services.
World’s verification initiative, which uses a combination of crypto-based identity verification and biometric data, is also being integrated with Zoom’s Deep Face feature, as outlined by Decrypt. The expansion is part of World’s broader strategy to scale biometric verification beyond its initial anonymous Orb scanning service, according to TechCrunch.
Additional partnerships include Docusign, highlighting World’s push to combat AI impersonation across various sectors beyond dating and video conferencing, CoinDesk details. However, the project faces regulatory scrutiny and some bans due to privacy concerns mentioned by DL News.
Looking ahead, the rollout of World ID on Tinder and Zoom will be closely observed to assess its effectiveness in curbing AI scams and the reception of biometric verification by users and regulators in key markets. The integration of World’s system marks a notable milestone in addressing digital identity challenges as AI-generated fraud grows more sophisticated.
