Rescuers in Laos have successfully reached seven people trapped inside a flooded cave after a weeklong effort, marking a critical step toward their safe evacuation, according to reports from Bangkok Post and Daily Maverick. The group was trapped when heavy rains on May 19 caused flash flooding that blocked their exit, trapping them deep inside the cave system.
The trapped individuals had entered the cave near Savannakhet province in search of gold when the flooding occurred, as detailed by the Sydney Morning Herald. Rescue teams have faced challenging conditions, including rising water levels and narrow, submerged passages, which required specialized diving skills to access the group, the Guardian reports.
