PNP vows probe and stronger journalist protection after Negros broadcaster Julito Calo’s shooting

The Philippine National Police have vowed a thorough investigation and stronger protection for journalists after broadcaster Julito Calo was fatally shot in Negros Occidental. This follows condemnation from media security bodies and ongoing efforts by police focusing on motive and suspects, using new investigative leads such as CCTV footage. The investigation’s progress and implementation of protection measures will be crucial in addressing ongoing risks to media workers in the Philippines.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) have vowed a thorough investigation and stronger protection measures for journalists following the fatal shooting of radio broadcaster Julito “Jaz” Calo in Negros Occidental. Calo, 49, was shot dead on March 20 outside his home in La Castellana town by a suspect who arrived in a white SUV, according to Rappler and the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

Authorities are focusing on gathering evidence such as CCTV footage to identify motives and suspects in the case, which remains unresolved. The killing occurred around 2:30 p.m. in Sitio Lapak Kawayanan, Barangay Robles, and Calo was known for hosting the local show ‘Waswasanay sa Quinto Distrito’ on 88.3 DNN News FM, as reported by multiple sources including the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

The Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFoMS) condemned the murder, describing it as a significant threat to press freedom and underscoring concerns about the ongoing violence against journalists in the Philippines. The PNP has committed to enhancing safety protocols for media workers as part of their response.

Journalists’ groups have also denounced the attack, highlighting the risks that local media practitioners face in the region. Calo was not only a broadcaster but also a local government worker, increasing the community impact of his death.

Moving forward, the PNP’s investigation will be closely watched as authorities work to bring the perpetrators to justice and implement stronger protections to prevent further violence against journalists in the country.
