Police unseal Abuja PDP secretariat, restoring Wike-aligned leadership

The police's actions follow court rulings that validate the Wike-led faction's control of key party offices. This move aims to end internal conflicts within PDP but highlights ongoing legal disputes. Watch for potential legal challenges from opposing factions and further court rulings that could impact future party leadership.

The Nigeria Police Force has unsealed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national secretariat at Wadata Plaza, Abuja, restoring control to the leadership faction aligned with Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike, according to Vanguard Nigeria. This action follows court orders aimed at ending the ongoing dispute over party control and also included the reopening of the party’s campaign office, Legacy House in Maitama.

Following the unsealing, the Wike-backed faction commenced renovating the national secretariat, including painting, replacing air conditioners, and updating office locks, in preparation for staff resumption and normal operations. These efforts reflect the faction’s intention to fully reestablish its presence and administrative functions at the party headquarters.

The opposing faction led by Tanimu Turaki has criticized the Police’s intervention as partisan and accused security forces of undermining court decisions that had previously validated the rival faction’s position. Turaki’s group has announced plans for legal action to challenge the unsealing, describing the Police’s actions as “state-sponsored persecution” and alleging bias in the handling of the internal party conflict.

PDP officials from the Wike-aligned side have called for unity within the party and warned against future disruptions to party activities, emphasizing that the restoration of control to their faction complies with judicial rulings. The resolution is seen by the party as a return to lawful governance and an end to the balance of power struggle that had paralyzed national secretariat operations.

Looking ahead, attention will focus on the outcome of Turaki faction’s legal challenges and whether the court will uphold the latest rulings that favor the Wike-aligned leadership. The situation remains critical for the PDP as it prepares for upcoming electoral activities, where internal cohesion could influence the party’s broader political effectiveness.
