Pakistan Ranks Most Polluted Country in 2025, India Hosts Dirtiest City

IQAir's 2025 World Air Quality Report identifies Pakistan as the most polluted country globally, with PM2.5 levels reaching up to 13 times WHO limits. India also features prominently, hosting the world's most polluted city, highlighting severe air quality challenges in South Asia. This underscores urgent calls for pollution control, with policymakers expected to prioritize clean air initiatives to improve regional health outcomes.

Pakistan has been ranked the most polluted country worldwide in 2025, with particulate matter (PM2.5) levels reaching up to 13 times above World Health Organization guidelines, according to IQAir's annual World Air Quality Report reported by Dawn. The report assessed air quality data across 130 out of 143 monitored countries, revealing alarming pollution levels in South Asia.

India hosts some of the planet’s most polluted cities, with Loni in Uttar Pradesh identified as the world's most polluted city in 2025, according to multiple sources including IQAir and DW News. Loni's air quality surpasses all other regions in India, highlighting ongoing environmental challenges in the country's northern industrial and urban centers.

Further emphasizing the severity, India has three of the world’s four most polluted cities, as noted by DW News, underscoring the widespread nature of air pollution across the country. The World Air Quality Report by The Hindu confirms Loni tops pollution levels in India, with multiple regions exhibiting poor air quality necessitating urgent intervention.

The IQAir report also notes that China and India continue to host the most polluted urban areas globally, while data gaps complicate a complete global assessment due to the U.S. cessation of certain monitoring programs, as Dawn reports. In contrast, only 13 countries globally meet safe air quality standards, three of which are in Europe, according to Euronews.

Looking ahead, attention will focus on how Pakistan and India respond to the mounting health and environmental risks posed by extreme air pollution in 2025. Monitoring improvements, policy implementations, and regional cooperation to combat pollution will be closely watched as vital steps toward addressing this critical global challenge.
