Mexican Navy Confirms Aid Sailboats 'Friendship' and 'Tigermoth' Reached Cuba Safely

The salvage and re-location of the aid convoy 'Nuestra América' demonstrate Mexico's commitment to supporting Cuba during its crisis. The successful rescue may influence future humanitarian operations in the Caribbean. Next, authorities might assess the cause of the ships' disappearance and plan safeguards.

Two Mexican sailboats carrying humanitarian aid, the "Friendship" and "Tigermoth," have arrived safely in Havana, Cuba, after being missing at sea for several days, according to the Mexican Navy (SEMAR) and multiple news reports. The vessels, part of the Nuestra América convoy, were delivering aid to Cuba amid its ongoing economic and power crises. They reached Havana on March 28, 2026, following a prolonged journey from Mexico’s Isla Mujeres.

Mexican naval aircraft located the two catamarans approximately 80 nautical miles northwest of Havana after the disappearance triggered a search-and-rescue operation. SEMAR maintained communication with the crews aboard the sailboats, which included nine members from Mexico, the United States, France, and Germany. Upon arrival, the crew was reported to be healthy and in good spirits, with the ships assisted by Havana port pilots.

The Nuestra América convoy represents an international solidarity effort to support Cuba during its current crises, providing essential humanitarian supplies. The two sailboats carried the final shipments of aid in this convoy, which departed Mexico earlier in March amid growing concerns over Cuba’s economic conditions. The unusually long transit time and temporary loss of contact raised alarms, prompting close coordination between Mexican naval authorities and Cuban port officials.

This successful arrival underscores both the logistical challenges and international cooperation involved in delivering aid to Cuba by sea. Authorities will likely continue monitoring maritime routes and communication protocols closely to avoid similar incidents in future aid missions. The effectiveness of such humanitarian efforts remains critical as Cuba navigates ongoing economic and infrastructure difficulties.
