A judicial magistrate in Karachi granted bail to 24 Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protesters who were arrested for demonstrating near the Karachi Press Club against fuel price hikes. Each released protester posted a surety bond of Rs5,000, according to Dawn reports. The protest, led by PTI Sindh President Haleem Adil Sheikh, involved clashes with police and charges of rioting and unlawful assembly.
The arrests stem from a violent protest on April 5, 2026, during which police say protesters attacked officers with sticks and stones, prompting baton charges and shelling to disperse the crowd. Two former PTI lawmakers, Dawa Khan and Alamgir Khan, were among those detained. The protest brought road blockages and heightened tensions regarding fuel inflation, as reported by Geo News and Dawn.
In addition to the 24 protesters granted bail, more than 100 other PTI workers were arrested amid the broader crackdown. An FIR was filed against these protesters at the Artillery Maidan police station on charges including rioting and vandalism, according to Geo News. Some PTI leaders remain in judicial remand related to earlier incidents in Karachi, including a separate rally at Banaras Chowk.
PTI has denied allegations of violence, claiming the protest was peaceful and condemning the arrests as arbitrary. The incident has drawn attention to ongoing political disputes in Karachi and concerns about the handling of opposition protests, especially those targeting fuel price policies.
Observers will be watching how the legal system processes pending cases against PTI members and whether further protests will occur as the government contends with public discontent over inflation. Upcoming court hearings and police responses may influence the dynamics of political unrest in the city.
