The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offenses Commission (ICPC) has updated its corruption charges against former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai, alleging he illegally acquired N289 million and $797,900. This revised figure reflects a reduction from earlier estimates, adjusting the scope of the financial misconduct accusations brought before the court, according to Punch Nigeria.
El-Rufai faces 10 counts of corruption and money laundering, with the allegations detailing fraudulent severance payments and cash deposit schemes accrued over several years. Premium Times Nigeria reported that the earlier figures cited inflated severance pays totaling N579.7 million and cash deposits of $817,900, which have now been modified by the ICPC in the formal charges.
The arraignment took place under heightened security measures in Kaduna, where the ICPC presented El-Rufai in court to answer the updated charges. Both Punch Nigeria and Premium Times highlighted the tight security and significant public attention during the court proceedings, reflecting the sensitivity of the case.
A bail hearing for El-Rufai is scheduled for March 31, as noted by Punch Nigeria. The outcome of this hearing will likely shape the next steps in the legal process, including any further investigations or adjustments to the charges against the former governor.
Observers will be closely watching how the revised figures impact the prosecution’s case and whether more evidence emerges regarding the financial improprieties. This case remains a significant element in Nigeria’s broader anti-corruption campaign.
